Strategies

The Trust is supporting the development of a set of conservation strategies that will guide the allocation of resources to the most important and needy crop diversity collections. The conservation strategies are an important means of identifying:

  • the collaborative arrangements necessary for efficient and effective conservation;

  • the collections that will be of highest priority for support by the Trust;

  • appropriate roles for the holders of priority collections;

  • appropriate roles for other individuals and institutions concerned with the conservation, regeneration, documentation and distribution of crop diversity.

The Trust is supporting two complementary and mutually reinforcing approaches which will lead to the definition of strategies for rationalizing conservation. These are:

  • to identify key collections of priority crops on a region-by-region basis and to identify capacity and opportunities for cooperation and synergy within and between regions (regional strategies);

  • to identify globally important collections on a crop-by-crop basis (crop strategies).

This process brings together not only the managers of plant genetic resources and other experts from developing and developed countries, but also other institutions and individuals that can contribute to the conservation of priority crop diversity collections. The strategies, although commissioned by the Trust, are independently produced and will evolve with the changing situation of collections around the world.

Crop Strategies

The crop strategies are identifying collections, on a crop by crop basis, which are critically important at a global level, and they will be used to guide funding decisions of the Trust. They are also identifying any gaps in the regional strategies with regard to important collections of crop diversity. The strategies will be largely driven by experts and holders of genetic resources of the crop in question. The process begins with a preliminary period of research into the state of diversity in the collections of that crop by an expert consultant, with assistance from CGIAR and FAO. In many cases, existing crop networks are mobilized for this purpose; in others, a group of national and international crop experts might need to come together on one or more occasions.

Regional Strategies

The regional conservation strategies aim at identifying key collections of important crops on a region-by-region basis. The process consists of a collective analysis of the development, by holders and experts, of models for cost effective conservation and rationalization at a regional level, and the identification of regional priorities for upgrading and capacity-building.
