Brunei has a population of more than 400,000 people. The Department of Agriculture in Brunei actively promotes development of various agricultural commodities as well as facilitates outsourcing of raw materials and food supply, recognizing that agricultural development is the main factor in sustaining national food supply, agri-food production, and increasing food security.
Agricultural production in Brunei currently focuses on the following food crops: rice, wheat, maize and cassava.
30-47% of the food energy consumed in Brunei comes from crops that are not native to the region. Most of these plants’ diversity is found elsewhere on the planet.
