Tajikistan has a population of over 8 million. Its economy depends on agriculture, which employs two-fifths of the labour force.

Local agricultural products include grapes and other fruits, various vegetable oils, tobacco and geranium oil, which is used in perfume. 70% of Tajikistan’s population lives in rural areas and 65% of the workforce is employed in the agricultural sector.

16-18% of the food energy consumed in Tajikistan comes from crops that are not native to the region.
 Most of these plants’ diversity is found elsewhere on the planet.

The Crop Trust has supported 2 projects in Tajikistan

  1. Barley: The Crop Trust supported the Republican National Centre of Genetic Resources (RNCGR) to regenerate and characterize 624 barley accessions with the objective of rescuing threatened diversity and enhancing use of the crops. All accessions are safety duplicated in N.I. Vavilov Research Institute for Plant industry (VIR) and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
  2. Wheat: The Crop Trust supported the Republican National Centre of Genetic Resources (RNCGR) to regenerate, characterize and safety duplicate 1,022 wheat accessions with the objective of rescuing threatened diversity and enhancing use of the crops.
