Tajikistan

Tajikistan has a population of over 8 million. Its economy depends on agriculture, which employs two-fifths of the labour force.

Local agricultural products include grapes and other fruits, various vegetable oils, tobacco and geranium oil, which is used in perfume. 70% of Tajikistan’s population lives in rural areas and 65% of the workforce is employed in the agricultural sector.

16-18% of the food energy consumed in Tajikistan comes from crops that are not native to the region. Most of these plants’ diversity is found elsewhere on the planet.
