Crop Trust’s Michael Major traveled to Morocco to join ICARDA’s Filippo Bassi in a participatory varietal selection project. Here, plant breeders at ICARDA and INRA are receiving feedback on crop wild relative-derived varieties of durum wheat, barley, and lentils from local farmers. Breeders tend to focus on desirable traits such as high yield, large grain size, and good disease resistance, and often forget that taste, tradition and habit play an equally important role for farmers. Because in the end, it is the farmers that choose what they plant in their fields.
