Catherine Bertini New Chair of the Crop Trust’s Executive Board

BONN, Germany (30 Dec 2021) – At the beginning of 2022, World Food Prize Laureate Catherine Bertini will assume leadership of the executive board of the Crop Trust from Sir Peter Crane, FRS, who is now retiring.

“I am delighted to be appointed as chair of the Crop Trust’s executive board and look forward to playing an active role in advancing and supporting the Crop Trust’s mission to underpin the long-term future of the global food supply,” said Bertini. “In the face of the climate crisis, it is clearer than ever that the Crop Trust’s unique mandate has never been more relevant or important.”

Catherine Bertini will be the new chair of the Crop Trust’s executive board.

Bertini was awarded the 2003 World Food Prize Laureate for her transformational leadership at the World Food Program, which she led for 10 years. She is a noted advocate for women and girls and was appointed to senior positions by three UN Secretaries-General and five US Presidents. Her impressive career also includes 25 years in the private sector and 13 years on the faculty of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, where she is now Professor Emeritus. Bertini also serves as chair of the board of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and on the board of the Global Food Banking Network.

“We look forward to welcoming Catherine Bertini to the Crop Trust. She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role, and we are delighted she has accepted to chair our board as we enter an exciting phase in the continuing development of the Crop Trust,” said Crop Trust executive director, Stefan Schmitz.

Crane, president of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation, is now retiring after several terms with a total of 14 years on the executive board, including serving as chair for the last two years. Crane is the former dean of the Yale School of Environment at Yale University. Earlier in his career, he was the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London, and served as director of the Field Museum in Chicago.
