Synthesis of new abiotic and biotic stress tolerant genepool through introgression of alleles from wild species into pearl millet cultivars
- Grant No
- GS15005
- Project Description
- Though pearl millet is a cross pollinated crop and thus has a wide natural genetic diversity, the benefits of gene assemblies available for biotic and abiotic tolerances in wild backgrounds have not yet been harnessed. This project aimed to begin exploring the wild relatives of pearl millet. The team advanced ICRISAT's collection of 794 wild pearl millet accessions, evaluating them for resistance to drought, flowering stage heat tolerance, and blast. Promising alleles were flagged with molecular markers; these introgression lines were conserved in the ICRISAT genebank.
