Rebuilding local seed system: Collection, conservation, and repatriation of native crop seeds in earthquake affected areas in Nepal

Grant No
GS15019
Project Description
The earthquakes that stuck central and western regions of Nepal in April and May of 2015 caused an estimated $80 million worth of damage to stored food grains and seed stocks. Approximately 60% of households' food and seed stocks were completely destroyed. This project facilitated the restrengthening of the local seed system capacity and household resilience in Nepal through rescue collection missions and the multiplication and repatriation of native and threatened germplasm in the ten most severely effected districts of the country. In addition, the national genebank improved its capacity to survey and fill diversity gaps and to back-up community seed bank collections.
