Safeguarding crop diversity for food security: Pre-breeding complemented with Innovative Finance: the finger millet component
- Grant No
- GS19009
- Project Description
- We propose to introduce superior pre-bred materials generated by the Kenyan finger millet pre-breeding program to the neighboring countries of Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia. We will transfer the skills and knowledge of inter-specific breeding to these countries for successful establishment of their pre-breeding programs. We will undertake molecular characterization of key germplasm through a pan-genome analysis in order to understand the true extent of genetic diversity that exists within East Africa (center of origin and center of diversity). We will then create a database of the existing material in order to enhance conservation and utilization of the rich genetic diversity globally. The most promising newly generated pre-breeding materials from this project will be conserved in national and international genebanks and made available under the terms and conditions of the SMTA of the PGRFA.
