Overview

Country French Polynesia Capital : Papeete

French Polynesia consists of five archipelagoes in the south-central Pacific Ocean and has a population of around 285,000.

Tourism is the country’s main economic activity. Agriculture now only provides a small portion of the gross domestic product.

Pigs, cattle, and chickens are raised for food; and shrimps and oysters are farmed. The traditional exports—including vanilla—have greatly declinedBlack cultured pearls, principally from the Tuamotu and Gambier islands groups, account for some two-thirds of export earnings.

The Crop Trust has supported 2 projects in French Polynesia

  1. Aroids: The Ministère de l’Agriculture et de la Pêche was supported by the Crop Trust to regenerate and characterize 10 cocoyam accessions with the objective of rescuing threatened diversity and enhancing use of the crop.
  2. Breadfruit: The Crop Trust supported the Department of Agricultural Research of the Rural Development Service to characterize and evaluate breadfruit for cold, salinity and drought tolerance with the aim of identifying varieties to be provided to farmers in French Polynesia and other Pacific countries for increased and sustained production in the face of climate change.
