Okra

Abelmoschus

Okra originates from Europe and Asia but is most commonly cultivated in the tropics and subtropics of the Americas. Only the fruit of the okra plant is eaten. As a vegetable, okra has a variety of preparation methods. Due to a high amount of a gelatinous substance, okra is also often used as a thickener for broths and soups. In some countries the seeds are used as a substitute for coffee.
