Samoa has a population of around 199,000.

The tourism, services, and light manufacturing industries have become increasingly important. Agriculture accounts for two-fifths of Samoa’s gross domestic product (GDP) and it employs nearly two-thirds of the workforce. Major crops include coconuts, taro, pineapples, mangoes and other fruits.

The Crop Trust has supported 2 projects in Samoa

  1. Aroids: The Crop Trust supported the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to regenerate and characterize four giant taro accessions with the objective of rescuing threatened diversity and enhancing use of the crops.
  2. Coconut: The Crop Trust supported the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Samoa to survey seven islands and islets as well as to plant a few selected islands with Niu afa coconut variety, in an attempt to conserve this variety using the polymotu concept.
