The Genetic Resource Research Institute (GeRRI) of the Kenyan Agriculture and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) works in association with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. GeRRI is located in Muguga South, not far from Nairobi. The national seed collection was established in 1983.

At present, the genebank conserves 51,000 accessions of about 2000 crop species of mainly landraces and their wild relatives. Germplasm is acquired mainly through collections from farmers or donations from national and international institutions. More than 12,000 accessions have been distributed nationally and regionally mainly for research.

An overview of the plant samples collected in Kenya but possibly conserved elsewhere can be found here.
