Crop Diversity Day Rabat 2024

Climate and Biodiversity: Towards Resilient Food Systems in the MENA Region

Crop Diversity Day Rabat 2024
Rabat, Morocco 19 Apr 2024

Crop Diversity Day Rabat 2024, hosted by International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), the Crop Trust and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, builds upon the momentum generated at the Global Crop Diversity Summit in Berlin at the end of 2023, where key stakeholders convened to discuss the crucial importance of crop diversity and genebanks in the face of global challenges. Drawing inspiration from the final communique of the Summit, which emphasized the urgency of food system transformation and the pivotal role of genebanks, this event specifically focuses on the MENA region.

The workshop will provide participants with a closer look at successful initiatives in crop diversity conservation and use in MENA, showcasing their impact on urgent food security challenges. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a dialogue that echoes the Summit's call for increased political and financial support for genebanks, particularly through the Crop Trust Endowment Fund.

In the spirit of the Summit, Crop Diversity Day Rabat 2024 will feature a diverse set of speakers from research, government, donor, and international organizations. The agenda includes a genebank visit, fostering a tangible connection to the conservation efforts discussed during the Summit. The workshop aims to heighten awareness among donors and partners, showcasing achievements and emphasizing the need for sustained support for long-term crop diversity conservation, availability and use in the MENA region.
