Overview

INIFAT is an institution with 108 years of service to Cuban agriculture, successor of the Estación Experimental Agronómica de Santiago de las Vegas. It has made important contributions to Cuban agriculture by introducing the results of scientific research. It is located in the province of Havana. Boyeros Municipality. The organisation is recognised nationally and internationally for its contribution to the development of urban, suburban and family agriculture, the development of plant genetics and the conservation and management of plant genetic resources, including micro-organisms.

Mission

Its mission is to contribute to the strengthening and sustainable development of agriculture and the conservation and control of phytogenetic resources and microorganisms, through the management of knowledge, products and scientific-technical services on agro-ecological bases, with emphasis on urban and suburban agriculture.

The Collection

  • The INIFAT genebank has 3,402 accessions in Genesys, representing a wide diversity of crops of national importance (Genesys).
  • The main crops conserved include tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) -- 809 accession, maize (Zea mays) – 374 accessions,  and soybeans (Glycine max) – 251 accessions (Genesys).
