Overview

The National Rice Research Institute Foundation (SNRI) was officially introduced to the rice sector on March 4 and 5, 1994, by the opening of its research center, the Anne van Dijk Rice Research Center Nickerie (ADRON). The Foundation gradually took shape in the 1980s. The rapid growth of paddy production and rice exports during that period necessitated consolidation and reflection. Two shortcomings became particularly apparent: the lagging research, regarding both crop cultivation and processing and marketing, and the rather inadequate seed supply. The architects of the SNRI therefore ensured that both of these elements became the core of the mission statement assigned to the new foundation.

Mission

By conducting and commissioning scientific and applied research within the rice sector, ensuring the availability of high-quality planting material and production technology for rice farmers who produce paddy in an environmentally responsible manner for rice processors, who in turn ensure that a food-safe product reaches the consumer, partly through the use of new insights into the processing process.

The SNRI strives to achieve its mission and goals by:

1. conducting and commissioning research concerning the cultivation and processing of rice, as well as the use and marketing of rice and by-products;

2. maintaining the purity of existing and developing new rice varieties;

3. establishing and maintaining a seed production and distribution system that assures rice farmers of the availability of good seed;

4. collecting, documenting, processing and disseminating information relevant to the development of the rice sector;

5. entering into cooperation with domestic and foreign institutions active in the same fields;

6. promoting and contributing to training courses serving the rice sector;

7. employing other lawful means conducive to the stated objective.
