Overview
The Genetic Resources Institute of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences was established in early 2003 to ensure of creation and management suitable country network for the collection, protection and effective use of consistent and purposeful research of genetic resources of biodiversity.
Mission
Genetic Resources Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences is a leading academic research institute responsible for survey, collection, preservation, conservation and documentation of biodiversity, and carries out fundamental researches on plant genetic resources of Azerbaijan. It is a national coordination institute, focal scientific center which plays coordinating role between the relevant institutions of the country which deal with biodiversity.
The Collection
- The Genetic Resources Institute conserves 12,721 accessions in Genesys, including 894 accession of wheat (Triticum spp.), 639 accessions of barley (Hordeum spp.) and 562 accessions of chickpea (Cicer arietinum).
Related Projects
The Genetic Resource Institute partnered with the Crop Wild Relatives Project to collect crop wild relatives and mainstream the wild gene pool in barley and grasspea breeding programs with the purpose of adapting for climate change
