Banking on it: seed banking for a climate-resilient and biodiverse future

12 November 2025 | 16:00 - 17:00 | UK Pavilion

Organized by: Royal Botanic Gardens Kew

Seed banking is vital for conserving and restoring biodiversity, especially in the context of climate change. It protects genetic diversity, supports resilient food- and eco- systems, and offers solutions to evolving environmental challenges.

This year, RBG Kew celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Millennium Seed Bank at Wakehurst. Since 2000, and over 2.5 billion seeds later, we've created a haven containing seeds from more than 40,000 different wild plant species – the world’s largest facility of its kind. We've collected seeds from plants across the world in collaboration with over 275 partners in nearly 100 countries and territories, helping them to set up seed banks in their own countries and training local staff in this vital work.

This event will celebrate the achievements of the MSB to date, and bring together partner countries and organisations more widely - to reflect on the role of seed collections, research innovation and partnerships in tackling the biodiversity and climate crises in different contexts.

Participants: Royal Botanic Gardens (RBG), Kew; UK Government; CGIAR; Crop Trust; Australian Government; South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI)
