GROW Webinar: From Bits to Bites - Software Development for Genetics, Genetic Resources and Pre-Breeding
29 October 2026 - 15.00 - 16.00 CET
Plant science is driven by increasingly complex experiments generating a wide diversity of data types. This data ranges from where a seed is stored to complex genotypic and trial data - and everything in between. Effectively harnessing this data requires robust data integration, storage and visualization tools that can transform raw experimental data into accessible, actionable insights for global breeding, experimental genetics and genebank communities.
In this talk Dr. Paul Shaw, Senior Research Scientist in Information Systems at the James Hutton Institute, will explore some of the software tools developed at theInternational Barley Hub to try to help us make sense of our data. Software like Germinate (germinate.hutton.ac.uk) for storing and accessing experimental data, Helium (helium.hutton.ac.uk) for visualizing complex pedigrees and GridScore (gridscore.hutton.ac.uk) for streamlining in-field data collection. This talk will describe the processes undertaken in the development of software tools and how they have been utilised by the James Hutton Institute and international PGR projects including BOLD.
