FAO: New Global Partnership to Conserve Food Plants

1 October 2025

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) announced the launch of the Global Conservation Consortium for Food Plants (GCCFP), a new international initiative to coordinate efforts to safeguard the diversity of the plants that feed the world.

“Innovations in plant sciences can help countries mitigate the impacts of the climate crises and biodiversity loss, and tackle hunger and malnutrition,” FAO Director-General Dr QU Dongyu said in a video message announcing the GCCFP. “Botanical gardens can play an essential role, as they are key to conserving the diversity of food plants needed for breeders and farmers, and are vital for achieving the four Betters – Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life, leaving no one behind,” he added.

The GCCFP is a collaboration of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), the Crop Trust and leading botanical gardens and genebanks. The New York Botanical Garden will serve as the Global Lead Institution for the first five years.
