New Video: On Collecting and Capacity Building

The newest Crop Wild Relatives video is live, highlighting the importance of collecting and capacity building!
Crop wild relatives, the wild cousins of our domesticated crops, are crucial to future food security. Before they can be used in plant breeding, however, they first have to be collected from the wild.
This video describes the time-consuming process of collecting and highlights how the Crop Trust in partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and a number of national and international genebanks around the world help build capacity and facilitate this work.
Collecting not only requires perseverance and determination in the field but also planning before hand. Prior to collecting, for example, permits have to be obtained, site visits need to be organized and localities of populations have to be identified. This video aims to highlight the importance of each step and showcase how the rugged traits found in these wild species will help improve the future food found on our plates.
