Science Nigeria: Loss Of Genetic Plant Diversity Setback For Nigeria’s Food Security Drive

Recently, the Nigerian Ministry of Agriculture warned that the country’s crop diversity is under serious threat. This major risk to national food security was in focus at a workshop in Abuja organized by the National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (NACGRAB), which houses the national genebank.

The event highlighted the Seeds for Resilience project, led by the Crop Trust in partnership with NACGRAB and others. The project aims to strengthen the national genebank and promote the wider use of conserved crop diversity by farmers and researchers.

“Millions of Nigerian farmers are poised to benefit from this project’s results in the coming years,” said Dr Anthony Okere, Director of NACGRAB. “We’ve established farmer clusters that now serve as early adopters and ambassadors of resilient crop varieties. These groups are future drivers of food security, particularly in the face of climate change.”
