Global Flagship Initiative for Food Security Gains Momentum with First Projects in Africa

19 May 2026
One year after gathering its pioneering members in Bonn to shape the initial direction after launch, the Global Flagship Initiative for Food Security is moving from ambition to action.
At a time when climate shocks, conflict and rising food prices continue to expose the fragility of global food systems, the Initiative has grown into a coalition of more than 120 governments, financial institutions, NGOs and private-sector partners united around one goal: advancing SDG2 – Zero Hunger.
What began as a platform for dialogue is now backing its first projects on the ground. In Cameroon, the launch of the CONVERGEFOOD programme in March 2026 marked an early test of the Flagship’s model for country-led food systems transformation. The Initiative is helping align partners behind national priorities, unlock investment and strengthen agricultural value chains – an approach designed to attract funding and scale impact beyond a single project or country.
Over the past year, the Flagship Initiative has also expanded its reach and influence. New workstreams on youth, women’s empowerment, civil society and livestock systems reflect growing recognition that food security cannot be solved through agriculture alone. A Scientific Advisory Committee made up of leading experts is helping steer the Initiative’s strategy as it positions itself within some of the world’s biggest policy conversations on climate, development and food systems.
That momentum has drawn growing international support, including from the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the World Food Programme. The Initiative has also raised its profile at major global forums, from the UN General Assembly to the G20 and the UN Food Systems Summit process, as food security climbs higher on the international agenda.
The Flagship Initiative will convene its second Annual Members Meeting during the UN Science Summit in September 2026, bringing partners together to shape the next phase of implementation.
