BOLDER: Establishing jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) and baobab (Adansonia digitata) conservation production orchards (CPOs) in Uganda and Ghana respectively

Grant No
BOLD WP7: CIFOR-ICRAF
Project Description
The project proposes to establish conservation production orchards (CPOs) of jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) and baobab (Adansonia digitata) in Uganda and Ghana respectively under the Crop Trust’s BOLDER project. This will follow the principles mentioned in the CPO strategy and methodology that is being developed. This includes establishing an international field genebank collection from multiple countries at replicated locations in an orderly and structured manner suitable for undertaking breeding, improvement, and distribution. In the current project period, international seed collections will be assembled and planted in nurseries to raise the seedlings. This will include planting 20-25 seedlings from around 75 mother tree families from each species planted at selected locations in Ghana and Uganda. This will be continuously monitored. This material will be used to establish duplicated CPOs, which will act as conservation plots as well as seed production blocks for distribution to farmers, and other stakeholders. It is envisaged that the material will be used to establish adaptation trials to develop improved varieties of jackfruit and baobab for distribution.
