- This project with the Vegetable and Ornamental Plant Institute of the Agricultural Research Council of South Africa and the National Plant Genetic Resources Center has evaluated the 99 cowpea and 102 sweet potato accessions for drought, heat tolerance, and alternaria blight resistance. The project identified 4 varieties of cowpea and 2 varieties of sweet potato as potential sources of genes for tolerance to drought/heat and high beta-carotene content, respectively. Seven cowpea accessions were also identified as potential sources of genes for tolerance to drought.
